M.E.R.I.T.S. Training Program

M.E.R.I.T.S. Training Program is designed to help your child develop and improve their fundamental basketball skills and strategies. While building leadership skills that will contribute to their overall success, by exposing players to values like Mindfulness, Exceptionalism, Responsibility, Integrity, Teamwork, and Sportsmanship skills and strategies.  These values help in developing capacities and advancement of their growth mindset. This program suits all skill and athletic levels so players will feel comfortable and encouraged while still being challenged to improve.

We prioritize teaching over competition in our developmental program. It is open to both girls and boys, and offered in timed sessions (usually 45-90 minutes). Each session with our coaches will combine “real-life lesson” mentoring with technical basketball skill development with an emphasis on ball handling, passing and shooting or finishing. Small-sided games (2v2, 3v3, 4v4) will be introduced during skill development. We will show players the footwork, body positioning and pace associated with excelling in the sport. Our basketball goals   for the program would be for players to:

  • Learn the elements relating to the basketball technique.
  • Develop game intelligence.
  • Develop balance, mobility, and speed.
  • Develop overall basketball coordination.

The ultimate goal for our M.E.R.I.T.S. Training Program participants is to make the high school team and play meaningful minutes. Once in High School goals are to continue developing, play varsity and obtain a college scholarship for their next stages in life. M.E.R.I.T.S. is progressive with skill; one week builds on the next.  Each week players drill on specific moves and concepts to progress onto other moves and concepts the following week. All of our training builds upon itself to create a building block in the process to becoming a complete basketball player. All players will be expected to commit to the program and are expected to attend school regularly and arrive to classes in a timely fashion. School attendance and school grades will be monitored. This completes the package of Student-Athlete.

Our annual schedule is as follows and each time period has a message that is attached to the MERITS Value.

  • M – Mindful (Jan – March)
  • E – Exceptionalism (August - December)
  • R – Responsibility (August - December)
  • I – Integrity (August - December)
  • T – Teamwork (March – August)
  • S – Sportsmanship (March – August)

BASKETBALL SPEED AND AGILITY TRAINING

To succeed in basketball, you need power, explosiveness and strength. But all these mean little without speed. You need more than just straight-line speed, though—basketball is played at all angles, and your speed should be developed with that in mind.

TeachThemYoungER HOOPS Club will run a 6 week program to train and educate the basketball player on how to improve their performance and get you ready for next challenges in their HOOP DREAMS.
